Generator and Standby Solutions by Sector
A farmhouse, a dairy barn and a municipal lift station need very different backup power. Our generator installation services match each property with the right Cummins generator, fuel type and transfer equipment, from portable inverter units to multi-megawatt diesel systems.
Home Generator Installation for Residences & Small Businesses
Home generator installation protects the systems you can’t go without during a Wisconsin outage: furnace, well pump, sump pump, refrigeration, medical equipment and internet. A standby generator restores power within seconds, whether you are home or away at the lake.
We start with a load calculation, recommend the right Cummins QuietConnect™ model, and install the complete system, including the automatic transfer switch, permits and coordination with your propane or natural gas supplier. See how the automatic start sequence on a standby generator works, or pair your install with our residential electrical services for panel upgrades.
Portable Generators
Portable generators supply manually started power for short outages, job sites, cabins and campsites. Meyers Electric offers Cummins Onan portables and installs the inlet and transfer switch or interlock that powers selected circuits without dangerous backfeed. Never run a portable generator indoors, in a garage or near windows.

Commercial & Industrial Generator Systems
Commercial generator installation keeps your business open when the grid goes down. Meyers Electric installs Cummins standby and diesel generator systems for offices, retail stores, warehouses, manufacturing plants and server rooms, sized to protect refrigeration, controls, data and production lines. We design to NEC Articles 700, 701 and 702, handle permits and test each system before handover. Learn how to prevent downtime from power failures or explore our commercial electrical services.
Standby power for small commercial buildings and light industrial shops.
Built for larger commercial buildings, manufacturing operations and multi-load facilities.
Compact diesel standby generator for dependable backup in commercial settings.
High-capacity mobile generator for industrial sites and temporary power.
Agricultural Generator Systems
A dairy or livestock operation can’t wait out an outage. Ventilation fans, milking systems, waterers, grain dryers and manure handling all stop with the power, and animal welfare and production are at risk the moment they do.
Our generator installation services for farms cover standby generators built for agricultural loads, with transfer equipment sized for large motors and single-phase or three-phase service, wired to Wisconsin’s agricultural building requirements in SPS 316. We have a Cummins emergency generator that's been in service for 12 years and twice over the past year has required on site repairs. My local electrician recommended contacting Meyers, and when I did they promptly responded in were at our home the next day. (We're over an hour from Rice Lake....) Austin is the technician that showed up to do the work, and in both cases he quickly discovered the issues and replaced failed parts to get us up and running again. On the second call, he suggested he could take the broken part to a local welder to repair, rather than pay over $1000 for a replacement component from Cummins. It took a few days to get that repair done, but I can only imagine what the bill would have been if I would called our Cummins service from Duluth! Meyers is a class act, and I very much appreciate Jake and Austin and the rest of the Meyers Electric crew.Posted on Google![]()

Wow, I had three small electrical projects I wanted quotes for. They grouped them together in one quote the first time, then three weeks later they sent a refined quote separating parts and labor. All I wanted was quotes for the three projects but the office manager refused to pass on the message and instead wanted me to again speak with someone from the field, which I have already done. She repeatedly said it was too complicated... one project was to replace two dimmer switches, the other project is to replace two bathroom exhaust fans, the third is to run electricity down a hill to have an outlet 30 yards from the home. Yeah, I guess they are too complicated.
- FAQ’s
Frequently Asked Questions
What size generator do I need for my home?
Generator size depends on the loads you want to run at the same time, not square footage alone. A licensed electrician calculates the demand of your furnace, well pump, sump pump, appliances and any EV charger or shop equipment, then matches a Cummins model with enough capacity to start large motors without overloading.
How much does generator installation cost in Wisconsin?
Generator installation cost depends on generator size, fuel type, transfer switch, distance from your panel, permits and site preparation. Meyers Electric provides a free estimate after reviewing your property, so you see the full scope before work starts. Financing is available for generator installs to spread the cost into manageable payments.
Can I install a standby generator myself?
No. A standby generator ties into your service panel, fuel supply and utility service, and the work must meet the NEC and Wisconsin’s SPS 316 electrical code. An improper connection can backfeed utility lines and endanger line workers. Hire a licensed electrician who pulls the permit and passes inspection.
Do standby generators turn on automatically?
Yes. An automatic transfer switch senses the outage, starts the generator and moves your loads to generator power within seconds. When utility power returns, it transfers back and the generator cools down and shuts off. You don’t need to be home, which matters for lake cabins and farm buildings.
What's the difference between a standby generator and a portable generator?
A standby generator is permanently installed, wired to your electrical system and starts automatically. A portable generator is started by hand and powers selected circuits through a transfer switch or interlock. Standby systems cover more load with less effort, while portables suit short outages, job sites and recreation.
Which generator fuel works best in rural Northwestern Wisconsin?
Natural gas works where a gas main reaches your property, giving you unlimited runtime. Many rural homes, cabins and farms in Barron, Washburn and Sawyer counties rely on propane instead. Diesel suits large farm, industrial and municipal systems. We coordinate tank size with your supplier so you have enough runtime in winter.
Do I need a permit to install a generator in Wisconsin?
Yes, in most cases. Standby generator installations need an electrical permit and inspection under Wisconsin’s electrical code, and your town or county may set placement and setback rules. Meyers Electric handles permits, inspections and utility coordination, so your system is code-compliant from day one.
How long can a generator run during an outage?
A natural gas standby generator runs as long as gas service continues. Propane and diesel units run until the tank needs refilling, so tank size sets your runtime. During multi-day outages, follow the manufacturer’s service intervals for oil checks. Our PowerGuard™ plan keeps residential generators maintained and ready before storm season.
Can you repair my generator during a power outage?
Yes. Along with generator installation services, Meyers Electric offers 24/7 emergency electrical service across Northwestern Wisconsin. Call (715) 234-3901 and our team will diagnose the problem, replace failed parts where needed and get your backup power running. PowerGuard™ members receive priority scheduling during storm season.
