Meyers Electric now offers green-minded consumers the convenience to come in and drop off their unused fluorescent lightbulbs and ballasts. Meyers is joining many companies in the effort to respect the planet by safely ridding it of these items.

Among others, high intensity lamps (HID) contain a very small amount of mercury, an element essential to achieving energy savings. While these lamps help consumers and businesses cut their lighting energy usage and reduce energy costs, it is important that any product containing mercury be properly managed when it becomes waste in order to protect public health and the environment. This is where the experts at Meyers Electric come in; we are providing the community with easy and convenient options for both businesses and consumers to recycle mercury-containing lamps. By recycling a mercury-containing lamp, you will ensure that 99.98% of the mercury used in the lamp is recovered or reused.

Why recycle?

Generally, fluorescent lamps are 4-5 times more efficient that incandescent bulbs. One important fact among many is that lamps reduce solid waste, since they last longer than incandescent or halogen lamps and require less frequent replacement. But because energy efficient lighting products contain small amounts of mercury, they should be recycled rather than thrown out so as to keep the mercury from being exposed to the environment. And while these lamps are not a major source of mercury pollution, the improper disposal of large numbers of lamps does add to unnecessary mercury into the environment. Recycling lamps captures the mercury and allows it to be reused.
